Bible in a Year: Episode 9

It's the end of the Torah at the end of Deuteronomy, so we finish up the laws Moses is giving. These laws seem like harsh laws to us, but we talk about how we can interpret those laws and better understand and meditate on them for our own context. We speak about the power of giving and what first fruits mean for us. We consider Jesus' teachings, the hope of the laws as well as catching up on Jesus's teachings, his miracles, and his love for us.

Today is a quick tour through 2 Samuel. King David has taken the throne and we see the rise and slow fade of David along with some scandalous stories. At the heart of all this is the promise God made to David for a dynasty to come. We explore this and even down to the structure of the book regarding authors and compilers. Bible in a Year: Episode 16

Today is a quick venture through 1 Kings. We catch up with the end of King David and we see the rise and fall of Solomon along with some future kings that cause some issues. In the midst of these kings, we see Elijah who begins to show us shadows of the Anointed One who is coming through miracles of abundance and resurrection. Then we move into John to see how the 1 Kings readings can inform our Gospel context as well as begin to notice the end is coming for Jesus in John. We have made it through 2 Kings and most of the history of Israel and Judah. We see the repeated sins of Jeroboam as well as the end of Elijah and stories about Elisha. These stories of the prophets help us see forward into the stories of Jesus in John. We spend some good time talking about the relevance of the church.
