Bible in a Year: Episode 19

We are finishing 1 Chronicles this week and looking at how the books of Chronicles compare to the history we read about in the books of Samuel and Kings. We notice the need to have David's hand on the Temple for the Chronicler and the set up of King Solomon that David does. Then, we continue our talk into Acts. Bible in a Year: Episode 20

We are beginning 2 Chronicles this week and looking at how the books of Chronicles compare to the history we read about in the books of Samuel and Kings. We notice the need to have David's importance in light of all that Solomon did. We also begin to see the history become very Judah/Southern Kingdom focused. Then, we continue our talk into Acts. We talk about the the ideas of inclusion and what happens with all the ideas of inclusion and exclusion we see in our world. We see the way that the Gospel challenges all cultures and backgrounds. We venture to the depths of the earth and back in 2 Chronicles. We find our way through some great insights on pride and humility, remembering the lesson we must learn comes to us first before we put others under judgemental condemnations. We end 2 Chronicles where it ends, halfway in a sentence with the hope before it, just like Paul living in Rome at the end of Acts, full of potential. Then, we continue our talk into Acts. We start two new books in Ezra and Romans. Ezra and Zerrubabel help us to understand the rebuilding of the Temple and the cleansing of the marriages of those who came back from Babylon. We also struggle through some of their actions and choices. Then, we begin Romans. We have to remind ourselves that even the great Christians like Paul took time before writing this great letter to the Romans, to help call the church together, insiders and outsiders. Nehemiah and Romans this week, and we find ourselves working, talking about it and hearing about Nehemiah. What does it mean that we are working as Christians? And then we hit Romans with some deep questions as well. What do we do with the law? Do we really need it? Should we live with it or just ignore it? Why do we do good things if Jesus saves us? Would we risk ourselves like Esther did for her people? Or do we look for ways to exact revenge on people like Haman? We get to explore the ups and downs, including the added chapters in Jen's Bible. Is God really just or do bad things just happen to anyone?  How do we identify ourselves apart from the blessings God gives us? We wrestle with these questions and more. We continue the story of Job and we start in 1 Corinthians this week. We also are halfway done with our readings this year! Congrats to you who are following along at home. This week we get to see Job for all that it is. And it's quite the sight when God steps in and speaks. We can begin to see shades of Job in Jesus, the true innocent sufferer. We also find ourselves in the beginning of 1 Corinthians with some messy situations that we have to remind ourselves that our life is communal. The individual choices impact the community. Bible in a Year: Episode 27

Welcome to the biggest book of the Bible in the Psalms. 150 chapters, and we set our sights on how to read these individual poems. We also discuss the idea of emotions and how that makes us even more human than just meeting deadlines and producing. We see Jesus through some of the Psalms as well before we catch back up in 1 Corinthians. Paul answers a lot of questions in 1 Corinthians about relationships, marriage, how to respond to each other with meats given to idols, and even communion.
